Al Khaboura – Hamad bin Said Al Muqbali –
The Al Qasabiya Health Center in the Wilayat of Al Khaboura organized an awareness seminar on hereditary blood diseases titled: (Today’s Children, Tomorrow’s Life: Let Them Be Healthy) under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Sulaiman bin Salem Al Mahruqi, the Wali of Al Khaboura, and in the presence of His Excellency Ali bin Khalfan Al Qutaiti, member of the Shura Council representing the Wilayat of Al Khaboura, along with a large gathering of government department directors, sheikhs, and residents.
The seminar included a speech by Dr. Samia bint Salem Al Khalidiya, the center’s director, who highlighted the nature of genetic diseases, their effects on patients and their families, and how to avoid them. She explained the medical procedures provided by the Ministry of Health in various governorates of the Sultanate.
Professor Salam Al Kindi, Head of the Hematology Department at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, gave a lecture discussing hereditary blood diseases that are passed from parents to children, such as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and enzyme deficiency. He talked about their prevalence in Omani society and methods of prevention and treatment, including early premarital screening and bone marrow transplantation.
Sheikh Salem bin Ali Al Naamani, an expert in guidance and counseling at Sultan Qaboos University, also gave another lecture explaining the social behaviors and habits that cause hereditary blood diseases, especially consanguineous marriages. He emphasized the importance of early premarital screening, following health guidelines, and the necessity of community solidarity to avoid genetic diseases.
The attendees watched a visual presentation on some reasons for not undergoing medical examinations before marriage. Before the conclusion, some inquiries were directed to Professor Salam Al Kindi, and everyone listened to his responses, which explained the causes and adverse consequences that befell some families due to the lack of medical examinations before marriage. Then, a play was presented, and supporters, participants, and center staff were honored.
