Iron Fighting Competition for Thalassemia Patients

The “Iron Fighters” competition is a special initiative organized by the Oman Hereditary Blood Disorders Association in celebration of World Thalassemia Day. The competition aims to motivate patients to actively manage and reduce iron levels in their bodies, contributing to better health outcomes and improved quality of life.

Competition Objectives

Encouraging Treatment Adherence:

The competition promotes consistent use of iron-chelating medications to achieve optimal health results.

Raising Health Awareness:

It increases understanding of the importance of controlling iron levels among thalassemia patients and its impact on overall well-being.

Providing Moral Support:

The competition offers patients an opportunity to engage in a community activity that boosts morale and provides encouragement during their journey of managing iron levels.

Competition Details

The competition runs annually from May to March of the following year, with winners announced on World Thalassemia Day.

Winners are selected based on achieving at least a 30% reduction in iron levels compared to their baseline in May.

Each winner receives a monetary prize as an incentive and recognition of their efforts.

Participation Details

Hospitals send invitations to eligible patients to join the competition.

Participants are required to adhere to prescribed iron-chelating medications and follow up with medical supervision.

Progress is monitored by specialized doctors and nurses throughout the competition period.

Participants' Opinions

After we were informed about the competition, I increased my adherence to my medication and canceled my rest days. I felt so motivated, as if I were running a marathon to win. I was eagerly awaiting the results of the test to celebrate my iron-deficit victory.

Amira Al Mujaini

bank employee

When I learned about the Iron Fighting Challenge for Thalassemia Patients, I saw it as an opportunity to motivate myself. Managing my time between studying and treatment was a challenge, but the competition encouraged me to increase my commitment to taking my iron-reducing medications regularly. The beauty of the competition was in sharing this with and getting to know many others who suffer from the same disease.

As an entrepreneur, I always look for challenges that can develop me personally and professionally. When I heard about the Iron Fight competition for thalassemia patients, I saw it as an opportunity to test my commitment and patience. I increased my iron-reduction medication intake and monitored my health status with enthusiasm. The test results were very encouraging, and I feel proud to have achieved this health goal, which is similar to achieving success in my project.

“I participated in the Iron Fighting Competition for Thalassemia Patients after the nurse at the University Hospital told us about it. The competition among patients from hospitals across the Sultanate was encouraging and motivating, especially for members of the Omani Genetic Diseases Association. I continued to use my iron-reducing medications regularly and, by the grace of God, won the competition.”
