The Omani National Center for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the University Medical City, in collaboration with the representative of the Omani Hereditary Blood Disorders Association, hosted today the First Scientific Conference of the Global Alliance for Sickle Cell Disease Associations under the slogan “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges, and Uniting for Better Care for Sickle Cell Patients”, which continues until November 9th.
The conference aims to enhance community awareness about the importance of limiting the spread of hereditary blood disorders, highlight the significant role played by both civil and governmental sectors in spreading this awareness, and promote cooperation, communication, and exchange of expertise.
Professor Salam bin Salem Al-Kindi, Director of the Omani National Center for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, said: “This conference is the first of its kind, bringing together elite specialists and concerned parties to support sickle cell disease patients.”
He added that hosting this First Scientific Conference of the Global Alliance for Sickle Cell Disease Associations under the slogan “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges, and Uniting for Better Care for Sickle Cell Patients” reflects Oman’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and knowledge exchange to improve patient care and provide effective solutions to the challenges they face.
The conference included a visual presentation about hereditary blood disorders in Oman and another about the message of “GASCDO” (Global Alliance for Sickle Cell Disease Organizations). It also featured a special exhibition for sickle cell anemia patients, where they showcased a variety of products including incense, perfumes, and clothing to highlight the patients’ abilities and creativity, support them in marketing their products, and encourage community interaction with them.
The conference opening was patronized by His Excellency Dr. Ahmed bin Salem Al-Mandhari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Planning and Organization, and attended by a number of dignitaries, experts, researchers, and guests from various sectors.
